Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) involves taking around 10ml of blood from you and then placing it in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the plasma. The red cells are discarded. The plasma which is rich in platelets that contain growth factors is injected into the skin. This stimulates the skin to produce more collagen, elastin and increase its hydrations. It acts as a nutrient boost for the skin. This results in general skin rejuvenation. It can be combined with microneedling to stimulate the skin further.
PRP treatments can take between 6-12 weeks to produce a noticeable result. As with any cosmetic procedure, the results vary from person to person. PRP can improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, improve skin tone, decrease pigmentation and scars and help in improving the aged and weathered appearance of skin. Since it is your own blood, allergic reactions are rare. PRP is good for improving the overall quality of skin and giving it radiance. It can make the skin plumper but unlike dermal filler as it does not give volume.
The main side effects are to do with the injection itself. These are mainly redness, bruising, swelling and discomfort of having injections. Topical anaesthesia can be applied to reduce discomfort.
Up to 1 week for the redness, bruising and swelling to resolve.
Effects are usually visible at 6-12 weeks and results may last up to 6 months.
One treatment costs £400. A course of three treatments costs £900.
PRP is great for overall skin rejuvenation and improving the skin quality to give it radiance. Botox is great for addressing specific wrinkles caused by muscle movements such as the drown area. Fillers are very versatile and are used to add volume, create subtle lift and stimulate the skin to produce collagen making it firmer.
